Topmadammen Tour

Our very own Carolien Krijnen has written a book celebrating ten remarkable women and their connection to Antwerp. This tour follows in the footsteps of these amazing women.

Topmadammen is an ode to ten women from the past with a connection to Antwerp. Some are famous, others are all but forgotten, but they are all women who deserve to be remembered. Each chapter tells the life story of one Topmadam in context with the social developments and historical events that influenced her life or that she had influence over.  

Topics covered include: the history of the hostess, the origins of vaudeville, the rise of women's rights, the establishment of Dutch-language education for girls, 17th century travel,  the history of the Academy Awards and more.

To go with this, her first book, Carolien has developed a walking tour, the Topmadammentour, in which she explores the traces these remarkable women left in the city. Where did they live, create, love, and experience loss? What did they teach, give, and leave us?

Costs &  Payment

Price 20 euros, includes the tour and one drink at the end. Carolien is also offering a discount of 10% for her book, which will be available to purchase at the end of the tour for 26,55€.

Please note that places that have not been paid for by the deadline will be given to those on the Waiting List. Cancellations after the deadline cannot be refunded.

Practical Details

Meeting place: In front of the Steen Castle along the Schelde

Meeting time: 10:20 The tour begins at 10:30, will take 1.5 hours and will end at Vrijdagmarkt. Drinks and book signing takes place after the tour at Café de Miserie in Sint Andriesplaats.
